“From the field you see nothing. Twenty steps down and there is a whole household.”

The guide

How to read it

The roofline is the ground. Walk the field first to see the openings, then descend into two or three courtyards to understand the layout.

Pair it

Hangu Pass and the Yellow River viewpoint are both within an hour, making a full day from Sanmenxia.

Practical notes

  • Steep stairs; not suitable for strollers
  • Some courtyards are private homes — stay on marked routes
  • 08:30–18:00
