Architecture notes · editor's pick

“It is a village pretending to be a house: storehouses, schools, escape tunnels, all in brick.”

The guide

How it is built

The estate climbs the slope in terraces: courtyards at the bottom, cave dwellings cut into the top. Signage explains the family's salt and shipping trade.

Combine

Song-dynasty imperial tombs and the Gongyi cave temples are nearby, making a comfortable full-day loop from Zhengzhou.

Practical notes

  • Some stairways are steep and narrow; not stroller-friendly
  • Thirty minutes by car from Gongyi South station
  • 08:00–18:00
