Why it matters

  • 01Carved across four centuries from 493 AD, still the high point of Chinese stone sculpture
  • 02The 17-metre Vairocana Buddha is the single image most visitors remember from China
  • 03West bank holds the essentials; the east bank is best at dusk across the river

The guide

What you are looking at

Over 2,300 caves and niches hold some 100,000 figures along one kilometre of limestone. Fengxian Temple, commissioned under Empress Wu Zetian, is the ensemble everyone comes for.

How to walk it

Enter at the north gate, follow the west bank south, cross the bridge, and return along the east bank for the view back. Allow three to four hours at an unhurried pace.

Practical notes

  • Ticket ¥90 covers both banks; buy at the gate or through the official mini-program
  • Bring water and wear shoes for worn stone stairs; there is little shade mid-river
  • 08:00–18:30, night sessions in peak season
