Why it matters

  • 02Laozi is said to have written the Daodejing here before leaving through the gate
  • 03Reconstructed gatehouse sits in a genuine topographic bottleneck

History walks · editor's pick

“The landscape does most of the explaining: a narrow gap, a wall, and everything behind it.”

Excerpted with attribution; full note linked from the creator's channel.

The guide

Small but legible

The site is compact: gatehouse, wall stub, a Taoist hall and the gorge behind. An hour and a half covers it without rushing.

Pair it

Combine with the Shanzhou sunken courtyards and a Yellow River viewpoint for a full day from Sanmenxia.

Practical notes

  • Best in autumn, when the gorge trees turn
  • Roughly 40 minutes by car from Sanmenxia South station
  • 08:00–18:00
